COVID-19 Status as of 10:00 pm:
Tests performed yesterday (Assessment Centre and in Hospital) = 169
Tests Performed total (Assessment Centre and in Hospital) = 7053
Presumptive Cases in Hospital = 17
Total Positive Cases in Hospital = 2
Positive Cases in ICU = 0
Patients in COVID-19 Care Unit = 4
Hospital Occupancy = 84.5%
Non-essential
and elective procedures and services were successfully reintroduced yesterday.
After the unexpected delay of over a week, this was an extremely welcome
development for patients who have been waiting for months for care. Safely
resuming services required an intense amount of planning, and we are grateful
to the many staff and professional staff who contributed. Appreciation is also
extended to those who make the care possible, whether on the front lines or
behind the scenes.
The Ethical Triage Committee is to be congratulated for developing a resource
for triage of cases and prioritization of services. The Ethical Triage Tool is
applied as a guiding framework
across programs, services and specialties when facing resource constraints.
Factors include procedure (procedure time, estimated length of stay, need for
ICU perioperative, etc.), disease (conservative treatment option
resource/exposure risk, impact of further delay, etc.), patient (lung
disease, immunocompromised), and community (number of cases in the Hospital,
number of cases in the ICU, increase in number of new COVID-19 cases in
Northwestern Ontario, etc.).
The re-introduction of services was delayed by a little more than a week due to
the possibility of an outbreak. Although the evidence indicated that the
associated risk was low, decisions were made out of an abundance of caution.
Clinical services were delayed until all the contact case tests, which totaled
over 200, were resulted as negative. This had a significant impact on patients
and staff. Moving forward, we must apply lessons to adjust to life with
COVID-19 and assess the degree of risk before taking a step backwards. Activity
is underway to determine how future risks will be evaluated for response.
