We are very sorry to report that 29 staff are isolating at home due to possible exposure to the COVID-19 virus. The health and safety of Hospital staff and professional staff is our utmost priority, which makes this development extremely upsetting. Although instances like this are an expected part of the COVID-19 pandemic, they can raise fears and anxieties. Our thoughts are with our colleagues, who will remain at home for 14 days out of an abundance of caution.

One of the difficult realities of COVID-19 is that those infected by it do not necessarily demonstrate typical symptoms. That was the case leading to this incident of possible exposure. A patient who was discharged following several days of receiving care on the 2C Unit returned the next day to the Emergency Department and tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, those who interacted with the patient during the previous admission are considered to have been possibly exposed.

Our Hospital is collaborating with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit to investigate the source of the COVID-19 infection. Testing is underway of those impacted, including patients who were in close proximity.

The response to the exposure has been highly professional and appropriate, and demonstrates a collective focus on the health and safety of patients, staff and professional staff. We are grateful for the expertise and actions of the teams involved in the response. Our Hospital continues to provide specialized stroke and cardiac care on the 2C Unit.
