The Pandemic Pay is a good idea, and we applaud the Government for recognizing that health care workers deserve special consideration at this time. We believe that recognition should be extended to every Hospital employee. Every hospital staff member is part of this team. Whether clinical, support, administrative, or leadership, all staff are integral to the provision of safe, quality patient care. We see you. We see you worried about your elderly parents, who you can’t visit because of where you work. We see you trying to balance work and personal life. We see you wishing you could be home-schooling your children. We see you showing up, exposed to the same risks. We see employees in all areas making sacrifices and rising to new challenges. We see your dedication to patients and their families. We see you supporting each other. We could not be more proud of our team, and we have advocated and continue to advocate with the Government for your right to receive Pandemic Pay.

As an academic health sciences centre, our Hospital engages in research activity. The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the review and approval to participate in new clinical trials and research studies. Two clinical trials are approved to proceed. One is the Canadian arm of the World Health Organization’s Solidarity Trial that aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of investigational therapeutics for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients. The other looks to evaluate the effect of a range of interventions to improve outcomes for patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with severe community-acquired pneumonia.

Thank you to those who completed the recent survey regarding the impact of and the response to the Hospital’s COVID-19. We are pleased that 818 people responded. Results of the survey are currently under review and will inform our Hospital’s ongoing COVID-19 pandemic response.
