Over the weekend, a new positive COVID-19 case was admitted to our Hospital. We are currently providing care to two patients infected with the COVID-19 virus. One is in the ICU and the other in the COVID-19 Care Unit.

The number of admissions to the COVID-19 Care Unit remains significantly below the bed capacity. At the same time, admissions to other areas of the Hospital continue to climb. Currently, 36 beds are designated for the COVID-19 Care Unit. A plan, which is approved by Infection Prevention & Control, will be implemented to adjust the 3A Unit to accommodate both the COVID-19 Care Unit and care space for non-COVID-19 medical/surgical patients. 15 beds will continue to be reserved for the COVID-19 Care Unit, and 22 will be allocated for other use. The plan incorporates the ability to quickly expand the COVID-19 Care Unit in the case of an increase in COVID-19 positive patients in the Hospital.

Our Hospital’s Regional Critical Care Response (RCCR) Program developed COVID-19 resources to support hospitals and First Nation communities throughout Northwestern Ontario. A COVID-19 Assessment Algorithm guides clinical activity when a patient is positive or highly suspected for COVID-19. Through the RCCR, medical professionals in the region can conduct video consultations with physicians who support the COVID-19 Care Unit at our Hospital to review clinical symptoms that require assessment and potential transfer to our Hospital.

Through redeployment efforts, our Hospital’s staff fills over 80 FTE of needs related to COVID-19 activities. There remains a need to identify additional staff for redeployment; the greatest need is for 32 FTE of Screeners to cover all shifts. Hospital leaders are reviewing staffing levels for opportunities to redeploy staff.

Our Hospital prioritizes both short- and long-term planning for Personal Protect Equipment (PPE).  This includes sourcing of reusable PPE products, including isolation gowns, procedure masks, and Half-Respirator Alternates (for N95). Reusable PPE reduces our reliance on the supply chain during periods of high demand. All reusable PPE must meet standards of equal or enhanced safety for the wearers, compared to currently stocked products.
