Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre COVID-19 Daily Situation Report

Thursday, April 30, 2020

COVID-19 Status as of 12:30 pm:
Tests performed yesterday (Assessment Centre and in Hospital) = 90
Tests Performed total (Assessment Centre and in Hospital) = 1934

Presumptive Cases in Hospital = 18

Total Positive Cases in Hospital = 1

Positive Cases in ICU = 0

Patients in COVID-19 Care Unit = 4

Hospital Occupancy = 68.4%To protect the community and reduce the spread of COVID-19, our Hospital limits movement of staff and professional staff between different health care facilities. Physicians providing care for patients of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit (CAMHU) at our Hospital collaborated with partners at St. Joseph’s Care Group to develop a plan to limit physician travel while ensuring ongoing appropriate care. Each physician who serves the CAMHU is assigned to a single physical location and conducts visitations via Ontario Telehealth Network for patients at other locations.

On April 25, the Ontario government announced emergency orders to better support long-term care (LTC) and retirement homes. The orders allow for the redeployment of staff to ensure they can work where they are needed most during the COVID-19 outbreak. Our Hospital is developing strategies to prevent risk to staff and LTC and retirement home residents and will prepare a list of staff who are appropriate for and interested in redeployment to LTC or retirement homes, should the need arise. In the case of changing circumstances that require additional resources, our Hospital has been assigned to support the Pioneer Ridge, Southbridge Lakehead, Southbridge Pinewood, Southbridge Roseview and the Walford Retirement Home.

Our Hospital will proceed next week with service resumption of urgent Surgical and Endoscopy cases. This step is necessary to minimize the impact to priority, high-risk patients. Discussions and planning continue to ensure calculated, responsible and patient-centred management of urgent patient needs and Hospital supplies at the same time. This includes assessments against broader pandemic metrics to ensure risks are mitigated. Weekly reviews of volumes, and monitoring of the usage and supply of Personal Protective Equipment, drugs, beds, etc. will inform activity. While a fulsome assessment and prioritization process is being developed to assess all clinical and non-clinical services and inform a comprehensive recovery plan as part of the Recovery Branch, this request has been prioritized.
