COVID-19 testing update: Turn-around time for test results have improved from an average of five-to-seven days down to three-to-four days. This development is due to a commitment from Ontario Health North to prioritize turn-around times for the North. Our Hospital has limited capacity for in-house processing of test kits. These are applied to priority groups and approved, based on medical guidelines, by Dr. Ahmed, Dr. Gamble or Dr. Kennedy. We are collaborating with the Federal Government to provide a second option for point-of-care testing within the Hospital, which will also enable results within hours.

In addition, it is anticipated that the local Public Health Lab will begin to process COVID-19 tests within one-to-two weeks. This will further increase capacity to process test results locally and within 24 hours.

We are grateful to our health system and political partners for their actions to enhance COVID-19 testing. The collective commitment to the people of Northwestern Ontario is highly evident and inspiring. All efforts lead to an increase of testing in our community.

The post-pandemic business recovery team is active. Jessica Logozzo, project lead, is engaging others to discuss key first planning steps. A larger team, including clinical and administrative leaders, will be operational next week and will report into the Incident Management structure. This important work provides opportunity to consider and apply learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic response to future operations. Input from Hospital staff, program and service dyad leaders will inform planning. Ideas and recommendations from individuals are encouraged and can be forwarded to Jessica Logozzo at logozzoj@tbh.net.

Revised screening criteria was applied today at Hospital entrances, as per the new medical directive for COVID-19 testing requirements. The new directive reduces criteria from two to one of several symptoms related to COVID-19, following Public Helth Ontario guidelines. Staffing levels remain stable, with three staff failing screening this morning. In addition, 36 staff remain off work until test results are confirmed. Occupational Health & Safety will identify and recommend in-house testing for staff based on individual circumstances.
